I normally purchase the Angling Times to read whats new in the world of fishing and to see any new tips that have evolved and could help me to catch more fish. Not neccesarily focused to any one species as i enjoy alsorts. But what has struck me is the lack of Perch articles out there.
I have just trawled through a back log of Angling Times and struggled to find many. I turned my eye to a few copies of Pike and Predator Magazine in the garage, these mainly focused upon Pike fishing. Now understandably Pike fishing is more popular and Angling Times has its Carp section and Barbel get a lot of coverage too. But why don’t they ever run a mini series on the Perch ? Such a wonderful powerful fish that is the pleasure of most young anglers when they start the sport. To me its a new found obsession and finding information regarding these fish isn’t the easiest to come by.
Also there is the Perchfishers website but again this doesn’t hold a wealth of information upon targetting this species, and in forums they also get a backseat. I am then left thinking to myself of creating a solely focussed website upon Perch fishing, and if the interest is out there i shall try to incorporate a forum to this species as well.
Could you all please let me know if this would be of interest, and also i will need contributors to help create a database of articles to try and support those new and those experienced in the awesome Perch.
I look forward to your comments and thoughts.

Well what did i want more than another large perch…? Not much i can tell you! And this morning after changing location another river caught 3lb’r graced the net. There was me thinking to myself that it wasn’t going to happen this morning and i’d missed the prime time, when low and behold the float started to bop away and off she went. What makes this even better was looking at previous catches there aren’t any other recorded 3lb’ers down this stretch of river, and this is my second in a year.
The last one went 3lb 10oz and this one was bang on 3lb. Will there be a 4lb’er soon who knows!
The hunt continues!!!

Pike Floats working out expensive for you too….? Well a few months ago i thought to myself about following others and making my own pike floats for deadbait fishing and also for bob floats for when livebaiting.
First up were deadbait floats, and i even impressed myself! I purchased a few strips of balsa doweling 3/4″ from the local art and craft shop. I think 3 strips were £1.80. Enough to make six floats as each was 12″ long. I cut them all in half and with some fine sandpaper began to round off the ends. This took little more than 5 minutes per float. After half an hour they were all ready for painting. I drilled a tiny hole in each and inserted a size 8 swivel ( next time i will try 10’s ) Then after supergluing them tight I painted the entire float with white exterior glass that we had lying about in the garage and left them to dry for the night. The next morning i masking taped them at the approxiamate half way point of the float, and proceeded to painted orange tops to them with some day-glo acrylic paint i found for £1.50 for a tube. I barely used any in painting them all. Another day went by to let them set and i coated them from head to toe in exterior gloss varnish £4.99 a pot ( plenty to easily do atleast a 100 floats ).
I was astonished at just how easy the whole process was. And cost savings that are unbelievable! A normal pike deadbait float retails at around £2.
My costs were :
- Piece of balsa required for float 30p
- Swivel 10p
- Paint 5p worth of dayglo orange (estimated - probably even less)
- Exterior Vanish 5p (estimated on amount used)
Total cost - 50p
I think you will agree that it is more than worthwhile to try it yourself! Let me know how you get on and i will try to post pictures soon!
Next week i’m going to try making my own pike bob float, for paternoster and roving livebait rigs!!!

So I purchased some little 2″ white grubs and 4g jig heads last week, they were delivered quite promptly on saturday morning. Many thanks to Ebay for the grubs and the Softbaitshop for the bargain jig heads!!!
Last night i thought lets go try them out. Headed down to my local perching hotspot and cast it in, let it sink and started bumping it along the bottom. First retrieve resulted in no action, thought i’d try the same again and slow it down a tad - this time i received tiny pulls but no positive take was achieved. Next cast all hell broke loose when lifting out to recast 3 perch all went for it at the same time! It was as if this tiny grub had really wound them up, unfortunately the competition was too vast and none of these fish managed to take the grub.
The next 30 mins was dead even after trying spinners it was not to be. I thought one more try on the magic orange headed grub and low and behold i managed to land my first perch to a grub! :-) Happy days! After this fish the action was dead for the following 30 minutes so i decided to call it a night . I’ll definately give these another go though hopefully conditions will be a little more on my side.
