Just a quick post to mention that I have just set a new Chub personal best on meat.  I set off for a quick few hours fishing at 7am and by 7:30 the tip ripped round and shortly after i’d netted a great Chub from a small River Medway backwater.   The scales went to 4lb 10oz beating my previous river best by 1oz.

Best of all it was hooked only a few feet from the bank under over hanging trees on a 2oz tip set up to a link leger of 2 ssg shot and a size 8 Drennan Super Specialist!  The bait as mention was a cube of luncheon meat around 3/4 inch sq.

Definately a stretch i’ll visit again soon!

Update: Picture added, not the best but still not bad for a self take

Carp on the fly! Mission Succesfull

Mission accomplished.. i set out at 7am this morning armed with the fly rod and a selection of flies and a few dog biscuit.   On arrival I had a quick wander around the lake and found a couple of carp nosing around on the top as the sun started to hit the lake, so in went a few mixers and i nipped off to the other little lake to see if there where any other oppurtunities to be had.  After seeing no other signs of fishy life i returned to my original spot.

Most of the mixer had dissappeared so i tackled up and out went a small yellow dog biscuit fly.  And low and behold within all of 5 minutes a pair of lips rose to the fly but unfortunately they turned away at the last second, dammit!!!  Undeterred I recast the fly a little further out this time, and straight away up came some more carpy looking lips that gratefully closed around the fly and i quickly took my oppurtunity to strike.  Wehey…. i was in to my first carp on a fly – time to hold on tight!

The spirited little mirror wasn’t happy from the get go and went on a high speed 20-30 yard run.  I had a assumed my fighting position with rod bent right over and a silly grin on my face that was from ear to ear.  Within what felt like 20 minutes of rod bending action (probably more like ten) this feisty little carp was in the net and ready to be unhooked.   Wow what a total buzz, in fact as i right this this evening i’m still smiling like a kid at christmas!

I had another wander after putting the little fella back but only managed to see a couple of others that were unfortunately unreachable with the fly rod.  I will definately be back down there soon for another go.

After the carp adventures i headed off to the river but after this weeks rain it was very coloured and seemed more like a day for bait fishing rather than fly and lure.  I had a dabble in various different spots for a couple of hours but didn’t manage to catch other than a take for a small perch that decided it didn’t want to say hello and came off after a few seconds.  Still my day was still made after the carp in the morning!   If all goes to plan i may even try to nip back down there for an hour or two tomorrow.

With the weather looking perfect this bank holiday weekend the plan is to go out roving.  First thing tomorrow the plan is to go after my first carp on the fly rod, fingers crossed they will be up in the water in the morning sun.  Well thats aslong as the weather man has got it right!   Then its off to the River Medway with the fly rod with some muddlers and minkies to see if i can tempt a few fish.  The Spro ultralight is coming with me incase the flies don’t produce… i’ll update tomorrow evening to let you know how i get on!

Damn i love the night before an outing!  Sorting through the gear and making sure i’m ready to go first light!   The alarm is set and i’m like a little kid at christmas!

Good luck to all for the bank holiday weekend!

River / Carp Fishing update : August

Firstly it’s been a while since my last update and this is mainly due to having not been out on the river for a while.  With the lack of rain and the extremely sunny days we’ve been having it hasn’t been easy going.  Hence i have been out carp fishing instead on a few picturesque lakes near where i live.  Success has been good so far with a few taken on free lined bread close in, which without doubt is my favourite way to catch them.  Nothing beats presenting a sunken piece of flake and watching Mr Carp swim up to it and suck it in – then whack!  Hoping the hook takes hold and then its time to hold on tight for the fun is about to begin.  I’ve not had any monsters but i’ve had fish to 14lb on this technique which has been great sport.  Last weekend i found a number cruising in the middle and most of them turned their noses up at mixer being fired out so i tried a few zig rigs a foot below the surface.  Thankfully the fish seemed to like these and i managed 2 doubles to 18lb in the morning.

The blessing of this is whilst i was talking to another angler down there i was informed that one of the lakes holds a few 3lb plus perch and a 4lb’er was caught last winter, hmmm!  I wonder what i am going to try for next when i have a few hours of spare time… well lets put it this way there will be a big worm order taking place soon thats for sure!  I’d love to see some more monster stripeys in my net.

Infact i may even go for them one evening after work if i manage to get away in time… although if its this week i may have to try for them on prawns as the worms won’t be here in time!  Never had one on a prawn before but what other baits are out there that can be bought at the supermarket without me turning the garden upside down, which i’m sure my other half wouldn’t be too impressed about.

Anyway i shant leave my posts so long next time and with a little luck there may even be some Perch pics coming back on here soon!

Good luck to all!
