Well i have no idea what went wrong… the pike weren’t about feeding like normal, the perch were not up for it and even the silver fish had legged it! What a day. The river was dull with a slow flow to it, the weather looked good but the fishing wasn’t to be that great! Tried different stretches down the medway and just before packing up managed a Perch just under 2lb – phew i had survived what i was certain of being a blank session. I really thought the conditions looked good, but thats fishing i guess. If it was always easy i suppose i’d get bored of it. Hopefully this weekend after a long week at work the river will be full of life again and those preds will be after some of my baited rigs!
If not i guess its time to sit back and read Perch – Contemporary Days and Ways that turned up in the post earlier this week! Seems like a good read so far and makes the daily commute to work a little easier!

Well this saturday it was 1 degree on the car thermo when i arrived at the river! It looked full of life but the big pike weren’t about to play.
Managed two jacks and a cracking perch at 2lb 12oz’s. That made the session for me! I love nothing more than hooking in to a specimen sized perch. Fingers crossed there will be more to come. Would still love to crack the 4lb barrier from the Medway… one day soon hopefully! Its getting closer with reports of other large one’s coming out in recent days.
I’ll keep you posted.

Pike Floats working out expensive for you too….? Well a few months ago i thought to myself about following others and making my own pike floats for deadbait fishing and also for bob floats for when livebaiting.
First up were deadbait floats, and i even impressed myself! I purchased a few strips of balsa doweling 3/4″ from the local art and craft shop. I think 3 strips were £1.80. Enough to make six floats as each was 12″ long. I cut them all in half and with some fine sandpaper began to round off the ends. This took little more than 5 minutes per float. After half an hour they were all ready for painting. I drilled a tiny hole in each and inserted a size 8 swivel ( next time i will try 10′s ) Then after supergluing them tight I painted the entire float with white exterior glass that we had lying about in the garage and left them to dry for the night. The next morning i masking taped them at the approxiamate half way point of the float, and proceeded to painted orange tops to them with some day-glo acrylic paint i found for £1.50 for a tube. I barely used any in painting them all. Another day went by to let them set and i coated them from head to toe in exterior gloss varnish £4.99 a pot ( plenty to easily do atleast a 100 floats ).
I was astonished at just how easy the whole process was. And cost savings that are unbelievable! A normal pike deadbait float retails at around £2.
My costs were :
- Piece of balsa required for float 30p
- Swivel 10p
- Paint 5p worth of dayglo orange (estimated – probably even less)
- Exterior Vanish 5p (estimated on amount used)
Total cost – 50p
I think you will agree that it is more than worthwhile to try it yourself! Let me know how you get on and i will try to post pictures soon!
Next week i’m going to try making my own pike bob float, for paternoster and roving livebait rigs!!!

So I purchased some little 2″ white grubs and 4g jig heads last week, they were delivered quite promptly on saturday morning. Many thanks to Ebay for the grubs and the Softbaitshop for the bargain jig heads!!!
Last night i thought lets go try them out. Headed down to my local perching hotspot and cast it in, let it sink and started bumping it along the bottom. First retrieve resulted in no action, thought i’d try the same again and slow it down a tad – this time i received tiny pulls but no positive take was achieved. Next cast all hell broke loose when lifting out to recast 3 perch all went for it at the same time! It was as if this tiny grub had really wound them up, unfortunately the competition was too vast and none of these fish managed to take the grub.
The next 30 mins was dead even after trying spinners it was not to be. I thought one more try on the magic orange headed grub and low and behold i managed to land my first perch to a grub!
Happy days! After this fish the action was dead for the following 30 minutes so i decided to call it a night . I’ll definately give these another go though hopefully conditions will be a little more on my side.

So after a long lay off of around 4 weeks i managed to pick up the lure rod and bag and get out on sunday morning with my good mate Jon. We spent nearly 4 hours roving the river throwing all my fav lures onto my favourite most productive spots… with not a single chase or take! Nothing was happening… barely any movement at all on the river after the rainfall, even the quiet areas that are just off the flow were dead silent. I guess it just wasn’t meant to be! Still it was good to get back out there…
We decided we just needed to catch a few fish, so thought we’d walk over to a lake i know where i always used to get one or two Perch in the evening after work. Arrived there and it looked as good as ever, out of the wind and in shadow… this little cut off from the main lake looked ideal. So i put on a small red spotted spinner and dabbled it in… within two mins the perch were chasing in a pack and going mad. So mad that Jon and I decided to take it in turns catching. Managed 10 takes between us landing 8 of them. Would have been 9 but a lurking monster perch launched into one of them and it came off. Bare in mind normally this spot would produce two maybe three fish and then go dead, this was the best day yet. None of the fish touched a pound but after having a blank on the river it was awesome to catch this many in such a small amount of time.
This tiny inlet on a local lake is one of my fav Perch catching spots and after seeing this hidden monster poke its head out of the reeds i think i’ll be there again very soon!

Have you ever used spinners for pike and perch? Just lately i’ve been out trotting the river banks and using a wide variation of spinners and lures, and one type of spinner keeps producing more than the rest put together. Its the Abu Reflex spinners and boy have they thrown up some suprises! When i think all is dead in a swim and its time to move i chuck one on and give it a go! So far its produced perch to 2lb, chub to 3 and half and pike just seem to whack it for fun. Albeit at the moment only jacks its still good fun! Last Sunday jacks were hitting it on the drop, i thought it was just luck so tried other spinners after to no avail. Even on moving tried the others with no results, back on went the Abu Reflex and low and behold another pike. Was it just sheer luck or was this one hell of a special spinner! I guess i’ll just have to keep experimenting! I’ll let you know how i get on. And if you have a fav let me know what you’ve caught and we can post it up for others to enjoy.
If you wish to try these spinners have a look here

Today I had news that a friend of mine has been caught by the EA without a licence. Infact he was fishing 3 rods so should have had 2 licenses. I had to chuckle to myself… he’s excuse is that he simply forgot to buy one. Although he had fished at 3-4 other times before this session without getting caught. Hmm!!!
Not sure about you but everytime i leave to go fishing i make sure i have my rod licence, its second nature and i always check its in my tackle bag. I know that at anytime it could be checked for, ok its not the end of the world as the EA can phone it in to check if i’d accidently left it at home. But still i know i need to have one before i can go fishing!
I had word the other day at the number of people fined recently in my area for not having a licence. I couldn’t believe the low number, but then i thought to myself how many times have i been checked whilst out and about on my fishing adventures… probably 5 times in the last 4 years. And in that time i have probably been fishing 150-200 times. That’s atleast a 1 in 30 chance of getting caught and thats just me, what about others that fish a few times or more every week?
Now not meaning to be too far off the wall but i think one of the main reasons for most people forgetting or not purchasing is the sheer fact people now believe they can get away with it so why bother getting one!
Why don’t fisheries check licences? Why is there not more EA wardens on the banks? Why build a fishery for prisoners? Surely more staff on the bank would result in more revenue from more people purchasing and from fines that these checks produce. Sometimes it just doesn’t make sense!
And if you havent got one click here to go get yourself one!
